The weight of the Anchor

It is a well-known fact in Search Engine Optimisation circles: including keyword-rich Anchor Text throughout your website will help improve your Google rankings.

So - for those who are still unsure - let's explain what Anchor Text actually is and how best to use it!

Anchor Text is the visible, clickable text in a hyperlink. When you link key pages of your website to other key pages of your site, you should aim for two things:
  • That the clickable text (the Anchor Text) includes one or two of your main keywords, and
  • That those keywords will also be found on the page the link goes to (a relevant link to a relevant page)
Make sure that your new links still make sense. Links exist to be user-friendly navigation tools for your website visitor, as well as ways for you to cross-promote other pages on your website or other aspects of your business.

With that in mind, your new SEO-friendly links shouldn't just be a string of keywords. You just need to try to 'tweak' them, to add a keyword or two into the clickable text.

For example, if one of your key phrases was 'Website Design', then this link below would not help your Search Engine performance at all:

And this would be non-sensical:
Websites web design

But this one would help to lift your Google rankings (and is also user-friendly):

There you have it - a nice, easy way to start improving the Search Engine Optimisation of your website.
