Social media buzz:
Facebook milestones; Pinterest users rank New Zealand 4th most beautiful; Google Plus still wants your attention...

Facebook timeline handy hints
Now that Facebook has rolled out its new timeline look, businesses have the chance to update their timeline with an 851 x 351 pixel cover photo. Have you updated yours? It's a great opportunity to represent your brand and create strong visual impact when someone visits your page:

Another feature we like is the ‘Milestones’ option – meaning you can create a post for significant company events. Start with the date your organisation was founded and create new milestones (ideally with an accompanying image) and it will be added to your Facebook timeline, creating a visually compelling company history for the visitor.

Now the third most popular social networking site in the United States, Pinterest continues to gain huge ground in online popularity. US retail giants Amazon and eBay have decided to add Pinterest buttons to their product pages making it easy for Pinterest users to build a "product wish-list" from a retailer's site - and share it with their friends.
There is currently a Pinterest competition running, asking users to vote for the most beautiful country in the world. At the time of writing New Zealand was coming 4th.

For those in the tourism industry, adding a ‘Pin It’ button to their website would make it easier for Pinners to add their images to their travel wish-lists. Tourist organisations who currently have a Pinterest presence include Pacific Resort Rarotonga and Central Otago Rail Trail - check out their stunning Pinterest boards for some inspiration.

Google Plus
The battle for social media dominance continues, with search engine giant Google releasing new features for Google Plus, including a new layout that it is very similar to the new Facebook design:

While New Zealander's don't seem to have taken strongly to Google Plus for their online socialising yet, it may be worthwhile at least reserving your company’s name on Google Plus if you are thinking of developing your social media presence in the future.  Likewise with your SEO strategy as Google’s search algorithms takes into account how many "Plus 1’s"* you have when returning search results.

With 170 million users, Google Plus is estimated to be ranked number six in the social networking sites and undoubtedly has its sights set on the top spot.

We’ll continue to monitor these social media sites as they develop more ways to attract fans – watch this space!

*"Plus 1" is Google's equivalent of the Facebook "like".
